Big Baldy Trail - Sequoia National Park

line

Big Baldy

While on our recent holiday, we went camping in the Sequoia National Park. One of our favorite
trails is called Big Baldy. It's not a difficult trail, and takes about three hours to do roundtrip. It's what I would
call a moderate trail. Theres a few fairly steep sections, and a couple of switch backs, but it's
not too tough - about two miles each way. Final elevation is 8211ft at the summit.

The Start of the trail

This photo is pretty much at the beginning of the trail - perhaps twenty minutes
in at most. In fact, you are looking down towards the beginning of the trail in this
photo. At this point, the trail is through a wooded area, and stays that way for
the first 30-40 minutes or so.

One third the way up!

This is a view looking down the path and out over the mountains. It's taken from
around one-third of the way up the trail. We're just leaving the wooded area, which you
can see below to the right.

Big Blady

I actually really like this shot. It is a huge view of Big Baldy himself. The summit area is
clearly visible. From here, it is still around thirty minutes to the summit.

Summit

This is the summit of Big Baldy. In the middle of the photo being camera shy, is a marmot. He was foraging
around for food, and didn't seem too bothered that we were there. Shortly after the photo, he started
sniffing the ground very seriously and then wondered off. We think he was hot on the trail of dinner!

USGS Summit Marker

The USGS Summit marker telling you that you are at 8211 Feet. Cool!

Summit

Another view from the summit. The snow-capped mountains are a wonderful view in the distance. Interestingly,
you can also see (if you look carefully), a strange radio mast between the trees. This mast is new as is wasn't
there a few years back. We weren't quite sure what it's being used for, but are guessing it was some sort of
Radio booster tower or something. It does a remarkable job of spoiling the landscape.

A look back at Big Baldy

A look back at Big Baldy from around half way down the trail. We'll see you again sometime soon!
